Scripture Reading: Daniel 10:1-3; Ezra 1:1-4, Ezra 4:4
Welcome to day 1. Our study begins with Daniel, our character himself preparing for a time period of abstaining, a period of three weeks; ours a period of 40 days. We prepare our hearts for Christ’s resurrection, Daniel preparing himself for understanding. What was Daniel trying to understand? His people were returning to Judah beginning to rebuild their homeland after many many years of exile. In Ezra 4:4, God’s Word mentions that “the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah and made them afraid to build and bribed counselors against them to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia” Could this be why Daniel was frustrated?
What we do know is that Daniel was abstaining from delicacies, meat, and alcohol because he was seeking understanding from God. And during this time period of three weeks he received understanding and a vision. The vision revealed to Daniel was not what he expected. He received a prophecy about the time period called the “silent years” , the time period before the birth of Christ about the empires that ruled during those days; the kingdoms of the north, and the kingdoms of the south, that would soon influence the choices made to crucify the Messiah.
During these 40 days you too may receive understanding as you prepare your heart, understanding about the things you may have prayed about for so long or possibly like Daniel, understanding about something completely new. Let’s begin this journey setting aside something like Daniel did. You decide what this thing might be. Set aside your motionless and get moving with our physical challenge. Abstain from meat these 40 days, and see changes in your health that are remarkable. Set aside your idleness and pick up God’s word and study scripture for 40 days. I guarantee change. I guarantee some type of understanding.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. This is always my favorite time of the year, immersing myself in scripture for 40 days. God promises to speak, we are only called to listen.
Every day I will include music for a time of meditation. This season I have been introduced to the most fabulous gospel music from Maverick City Music. “Maybe now more than ever not just the Church but the world needs a plurality of strong diverse voices carrying messages that can help reshape the world. However we didn’t start out to be a diverse community for the sake of diversity. We simply became aware of our deep need for people that were so absent from our lives that their silence was deafening. Our response was to create space for that which we had so profoundly became of aware of our need for each other.” (https://www.maverickcitymusic.com/about)
