Today’s devotion is about Firstfruits.  So often in scripture when an offering was given, the giver gave their first crop, their first born animal, their firstfruit. This tradition was very important to the people of God. Even our friend Abel,  from our 1st devotion, gave the Lord his first born of his flock (Genesis 4:4) . Most importantly, Christ was God’s firstfruit offering to us, his first born to sacrifice for our sin .  

So the principle of firstfruits should be important to us during lent as we give an offering to God.  Check out these verses from Proverbs 3:5-12 (The Message translation) 

Trust God from the bottom of your heart;

    don’t try to figure out everything on your own.

Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go;

    he’s the one who will keep you on track.

Don’t assume that you know it all.

    Run to God! Run from evil!

Your body will glow with health,

    your very bones will vibrate with life!

Honor God with everything you own;

    give him the first and the best.

Your barns will burst,

    your wine vats will brim over.

But don’t, dear friend, resent God’s discipline;

    don’t sulk under his loving correction.

It’s the child he loves that God corrects;

    a father’s delight is behind all this.

The children of God  saw these first fruits as an investment into their future. God told them that if they brought their first fruits to him, he would bless them, our barns will burst. 

Giving our firstfruits means giving our best to God. It means sacrificing something that costs us a little. It means putting God first.  Making a first fruit offering opens us up to allow God to work in our life.( https://get.tithe.ly/blog/first-fruit
