Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the Lord?
To obey is better than sacrifice. 1 Samuel 15:22.
Wise words from the prophet Samuel. To obey is better than sacrifice. Over the past couple of days we have seen evidence of disobedience in our own society. Many have spoken out today asking the young people of this country to stay home. Leave the beaches. Healthcare workers placing pleas on social media, “I stayed at work for you. You stay at home for me.”. The sin of these young people could possibly have very negative consequences for our country as a whole.
To obey is better than sacrifice. To obey is an offering to God. One of the three offerings that we studied on day 22. Jesus taught his disciples a lesson about building a solid foundation, about obedience. 46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.[a] 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.” Luke 6:46-49
Even small deviations from obedience to God can lead to devastations. Let’s heed God’s laws. Let’s heed the suggestions our public authority and experts are communicating during this pandemic. Today, the amount of deaths in Italy proceeded the number of deaths in China. I present my offering to you Lord. These forty days, I may sin over and over again. But, my offering is to hear your words and heed your advice. I choose to build my foundation on the rock. And when the floods come, and unfortunately many are predicting that they will come, my house will not be shaken.
Dear Lord, I pray today for your words to be heard through out the whole land. A prayer of obedience for our country. Please help us to “flatten the curve”. Help us as healthcare workers all over this land to have peace that surpasses all understanding. This is a very trying and emotional time for those in healthcare. Please lift them up and care for them. Provide the supplies that we need to care for the ill and feel safe. These things I pray in your holy sons name. Amen.
