It’s impossible to have a 40 day challenge like this without a discussion of Daniel. If you are not familiar with the story of Daniel from the bible, then allow me to summarize. Daniel and some of his friends refused to eat the food that the king provided. They requested to eat just their own vegetarian diets. They ate this diet for 10 days and proved without a doubt that their body’s were strong following this diet. It’s not that Daniel and his buddies were die hard vegans, they did not want to defile their bodies with unsacramental meat that the king was serving. Later, Daniel again spoke about a fast where he ate no meat for three weeks. See Daniel 10:3. These famous verses are where we get the Daniel Fast diet. The 21 days, or three weeks of eating only fruits and vegetables.

In those days I, Daniel, was mourning for three weeks. I ate no delicacies, no meat or wine entered my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, for the full three weeks.  Daniel 10:3

Ok, well what comes next after these verses is the most important part!!!! After fasting from meat and humbling himself to the Lord for 21 days a messenger from the Lord came directly to speak with him, and it describes his likeness as to a man. Could this have been Christ himself? He then gave Daniel a vision into the future. I have included this text below. It’s so beautiful

Suddenly, a hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. 11He said to me, “Daniel, you are a man who is highly precious. Consider carefully the words that I am about to say to you. Stand up, for I have now been sent to you.”

And when he had said this to me, I stood up trembling.

Do not be afraid, Daniel,” he said, “for from the first day that you purposed to understand and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.

While he was speaking these words to me, I set my face toward the ground and became speechless. 16And suddenly one with the likeness of a manb touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and said to the one standing before me, “My lord, because of the vision, I am overcome with anguish, and I have no strength. 17How can I, your servant, speak with you, my lord? Now I have no strength, nor is any breath left in me.”

18Again the one with the likeness of a man touched me and strengthened me. 19“Do not be afraid, you who are highly precious,” he said. “Peace be with you! Be strong now, be very strong!”

As he spoke with me, I was strengthened and said, “Speak, my lord, for you have strengthened me.” Daniel 10:10-19

Do you see it???? “As he spoke, I was strengthened.” I hope and pray for Christ to strengthen us these forty days as we humble ourselves in preparation for the remembrance of his resurrection. Such a beautiful commentary by Daniel. I have chill bumps, just thinking about him on his knees trembling. Thank you Jesus for the strength you give us. Thank you Daniel for your example to follow.

For those of you that love a little science behind the scenes, the Daniel fasting diet has been studied by health professionals and stood the test. I have attached three studies.

  1. The Daniel Fast is based on the Biblical book of Daniel, is commonly partaken for 21 days, and involves food intake in accordance with a stringent vegan diet. 

2. A 21 day Daniel Fast improves selected biomarkers of antioxidant status and oxidative stress in men and women

Our data indicate that a 21 day Daniel Fast decreases blood oxidative stress, increases antioxidant capacity (as measured by TEAC), and increases NOx. Although further work is needed to extend these initial findings, our data provide important insight into the ability of this Biblically-based fast to improve biomarkers of human health.

3. Effect of a 21 day Daniel Fast on metabolic and cardiovascular disease risk factors in men and women

A 21 day period of modified dietary intake in accordance with the Daniel Fast is 1) well-tolerated by men and women and 2) improves several risk factors for metabolic and cardiovascular disease. Larger scale, randomized studies, inclusive of a longer time period and possibly a slight modification in food choice in an attempt to maintain HDL cholesterol, are needed to extend these findings.
